OUR THRIVING LITTLE VILLAGE IS PACKED WITH PLEASURES. ON THE WEEKEND JOIN THE LOCALS WANDERING DOWN TO 'GROUND UP CAFE'. THERE'S NOTHING QUITE LIKE WATCHING THE WORLD GO BY WITH GREAT COFFEE AND BRUNCH IN HAND!

VIBRANT PAUATAHANUI

After coffee, The Trade Store may spark you interest - they sell local produce, oils, designer jewellery, possum products and locally 'grown' alpaca. And it's not unusual to see alpaca stretching their legs around the car park with their owners!

Pauatahanui also boasts its very own historic Light House Cinema, just 100-meters down the road from the cafe. It is a luxurious experience with dinner options, couples couch seating, wine, beer or coffee to enjoy in either of the two cinemas - there's certainly not popcorn on the seats!

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

An early European Settlement, Pauatahanui is a village in New Zealand's North Island. It is at the far eastern end of the Pauatahanui Inlet, an arm of the Porirua Harbour, north-east of Wellington. At the 2013 New Zealand census, its population (including nearby rural areas) was 1,080.

This is a historic village in New Zealand terms, and is of interest to archaeologists, environmentalists and historians. Rich with culture and containing remnants of battle grounds, Maori Pa, and historic sites. Wildlife and native birds and fauna are well protected and the Inlet and surrounding waters house a marine and bird sanctuary.

The name Pāuatahanui means shellfish!

HEADING NORTH

Driving just twenty minutes north will deliver you to the spectacular Kapiti Coast. On the way, discover Farmer's Markets, homemade chocolate, artisan cheeses and breads, our local wines and olive oils, art galleries and of course more cafes.

On the way, the Paekakariki Hill Road lookout offers an amazing vista of Kapiti Island and even the South Island, on a clear day. From the long stretch of Plimmerton Beach, Mana Island is captivating, especially around sunset.
